Who is Mr. Clucky Harming?: I've owned a condo in the same building as Mark has for almost 9 years. In fact Mark's unit is just a couple of doors down from mine and I can say that I've never been bothered by Mr. Clucky's presence, on the contrary I'm glad to know there's one more rooster living a healthy happy life and not being kept under inhumane conditions in some "farm" or being sacrificed to Santeria. When you come to South Beach seeing Mark riding his bicycle with the beautiful Mr. Clucky sitting on the handle bar is a sight you won't want to miss. So why evict a harmless creature? Now history has shown that nothing or no one is more powerful than public opinion, so go ahead, join Mark in his quest to keep Mr. Clucky in his safe and healthy home. No Eviction for Our Feathered Friend: In my 29 years as a humane educator I have had the opportunity to present programs to thousands of children. I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr Clucky on numerous occasions and have incorporated his photo with a Mimai Springs elementary student in to me You Can Be an Animal Hero presentation. How wonderful that Mr Clucky was rescued and enjoys a full life with his friend Mark Buckley. I urge Miami Beach to create a permit exemption, it's easy to do and done all of the time. WE LOVE YOU MR. CLUCKY: On behalf of EarthSave Miami, we would like to inform the City of MIami Beach that Mr. Clucky is vital to our cause, our message and our work. In our advocacy for farm animals, we often tell people that we speak out on behalf of those who have "no voice". It seems that even animal advocates can underestimate the abilities and talents of our planetary brothers and sisters. Anyone who has ever met Mr. Clucky will tell you that this amazing bird has an uncanny ability to communicate effectively with humans and his message is undeniably one of love and compassion. We have a lot to learn from our feathered friends. Here's hoping that the City of Miami Beach will repeal its attempts to evict him from the only home he's known since being rescued as a baby by his good friend, Mr. Mark Buckley. Thank you for your consideration. Linda Bower, Miami Springs, FL
Save Mr. Clucky!:I am writing in support of Mr. Clucky and his owner Mark Buckley. They are local icons and an exception should be made for them to allow them to continue to live in their residence and interact with the community in peace. This is a single, obviously well-loved bird and should be treated legally the same way an exotic pet bird would be treated. The presence of Mr. Clucky is part of what makes South Beach so unique, and has brought positive national attention to the area. Please reconsider the matter, and allow Mr. Clucky to remain a resident of South Beach. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Annie W. Payne
Letter to the Mayor: We were very shocked and upset to read the story this morning about Mr. Clucky's possible eviction from Miami Beach. Mr. Clucky is a symbol for what keeps Miami Beach unique. He creates positive attention for our city. Certainly, there are not many places where one can enjoy seeing a bicycle riding rooster around. Mr. Clucky is a city celebrity, an icon for animal rights and a tribute to the unique scene that is Lincoln Road. To class him as a "farm animal" seems as insulting as classing Miami Beach as just some small town. Roosters may crow - just as dogs bark, birds chirp, cars blow their horns, police and fire sirens scream at all hours here - no one would dare suggest we ban any of those noisy things from the beach. We sincerely hope the City will reconsider evicting Mr. Clucky and his partner, and show them the respect they deserve. There are plenty of other undesirable elements the city can focus its resources and energy improving, like sex offenders living under our bridges, body parts washing up in garbage bags, litter lining the beaches, etc. Do we really want to gain notoriety for being a city of animal discriminators as well? Save Mr. Clucky: I see absolutely NOTHING wrong in having Mr. Clucky ride around, pose for pictures and generally make people happy that he is there. This is not just a "barn yard" animal, he's much more than that. I was recently in Florida and saw this story on the news, I just couldn't belive that complaints were made about him. I am an animal lover and have a cockatoo who is very loud! I wouldn't think of giving him up!! Mr. Clucky only gives pleasure to people. Long may he wave! Carolyn McLaughlin-Sideman, Fresh Meadows, New York
An Icon: I recently moved away from South Beach after 12 years but one of my greatest joys in the last few years was seeing Mr. Clucky out on the town, making his rounds. The only thing that makes an animal a "farm animal" is that some people eat them - very arbitrary, indeed! Jenn , Dallas, TX
Please understand Mr. Clucky is a South Florida "thing": Think carribean... think mojito... think Earnest Hemingway -- okay he had cats -- but he got to keep ALL of those. Chickens are a part of the culture. Just like parrots and eguanas. He means a lot to me. He's a pet -- not "livestock." Not all breeds of chickens were meant to be "livestock". Mr. Clucky, Miami Beach mascot: Don't the Miami Beach city fathers understand the great publicity value of Mr. Clucky??? A tourist city NEEDS publicity. Whoever is trying to evict him has feathers for brains . Jeanette Verster, Miami, Fla.
